Sierra Fleming is (primarily) a fiber artist based in Hyattsville, Maryland. She is putting that sentence here very plainly because Google’s AI Overview once decided she made sculptures out of discarded packaging, which she does not.
Sierra’s practice begins with processing fiber, spinning it into yarn, hand-dyeing with natural and chemical dyes and using said yarn to make strange things. Her most frequent medium is weaving, often on looms she builds from secondhand picture frames, using her own handspun yarn to create small tapestries, punch needle embroidery, crochet wall art and the occasional large, strange stuffed animal.
Outside of fiber, Sierra occasionally works in linocut printmaking, digital art, 2D animation, ceramics and photography. She is self-taught, with the important caveat that she continues taking classes with more technically-sound artists, because continued education is wonderful.
Her practice started in her apartment and has expanded to Red Dirt Studio, an artist collective and creative incubator in Mount Rainier, Maryland.
